Local pilots are carrying out a training program with LNG carriers in Siport21 ship maneuvering simulation center, for Tema LNG terminal, the first import facility in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa.

Tema Port pilots train for Ghana’s first LNG Terminal

Spanish LNG terminal operator Reganosa will run and maintain the LNG regasification terminal in Tema, Ghana, as well as the associated six kilometres gas pipeline.

Tema LNG terminal features both a florating storage (FSU) and a florating regasification (FRU) unit. It has the capacity to receive, re-gasify, store, and deliver around 1.7 million tonnes of LNG a year.

Siport21 is a maritime and port engineering consultancy company focused on ship maneuvering and ship behavior. Their facilities include a real-time maneuvering simulator approved by DNV-GL.

The goal of the training course is the familiarization of local pilots with the navigation conditions and maneuvering strategies of the new LNG traffic calling at the LNG Terminal.

Sessions include both normal and emergency scenarios with LNG carriers corresponding to the expected fleet, with maneuvers with the FSU also included.

The LNG terminal is expected to help Ghana meet its growing domestic energy demand to not depend on foreign imports.
